Rebels Freeze Coolies

Write up by Darren:

The Rebels dominated the Coolies for most of Tuesday night in what could have been a very one-sided game. Mike opened the scoring in the first, but the red goalie stood on his head keeping his team in it until the second half when Dustin ripped a shot from the slot making it 2-0. The Coolies pressured towards the end of the game, but Scott stood strong to earn his second shutout of the season. Mike added an empty net goal in the final minute for his second of the game capping a 3-0 victory for the Rebels.

Season Ends For Rebels After Loss to Mooseknuckles.

The Rebels lost 5-0 against the Mooseknuckles. The Rebels played the best they could against the far superior 'knuckles, a team that could easily have had success playing 2 or 3 divisions higher. The Rebels have nothing to be ashamed of though... the beginning of the season was shaky with the team posting a 3-7-2 record but they turned things completely around in the second half of the season going 6-5-1. The Rebels then posted 2 wins a 1 loss in the post season.

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Rebels Calm The Chaos

The Rebels defeated Team Chaos by a score of 2-0 which evens out the season match ups between the two teams at 1-1-1. Nestor played outstanding and, with a little help from his goal posts a couple of times, he earned his first shut out of the season. Kevin had both goals for the team with Kyle and Dustin R. adding two assists each. The Rebels now need just 1 win in their final 3 games to secure a playoff berth.

Saturday, July 11, 2009

Rebels Can't Crack the Mooseknuckles

The Rebels played solid versus the first ranked Moosknuckles but ended up on the losing side of a 4-1 game. Devin had the only goal for the Rebels with Kyle and Kevin added the helpers. The Rebels now move down to 8th in the division and are holding on to that final playoff spot by just 3 points. There are just 4 games remaining in the season and two of those are against the 9th and 10th place teams so the playoff drive between these teams could come right down to the wire.

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

Rebels Blank The Edge

Rebels Tie Spitfires

After defeating the Spitfires by a score of 10-1 in their first meeting, the Rebels could only manage a draw for the rematch with both teams scoring 7 goals a piece. Cody ended up keeping the Rebels in the game scoring their last 4 goals and adding an assist for a total of 5 points. Ryan also had a stellar game with a goal and 3 assists for a 4 point night. The Rebels are still just barely holding on to that final playoff spot and are really going to have to fight hard to keep it over the final 6 games of the season.

Sunday, June 28, 2009

Rebels Lose To Rascalz

The first meeting between the Rebels and the Ragamuffin Rascalz ended 7-4 in favour of the Rascalz. Their second meeting wasn't much different with the Rebels coming up short by a score of 7-3. Steve had 2 goals and Cody came out with 2 assists. With the loss the Rebels have now slipped out of the 8th and final playoff spot in the division so they'll have to start tallying some wins again soon to get back in contention.

Sunday, June 21, 2009

Rebels Come Up Short Versus Rampage

The Rebels lost to the second place Rampage by a score of 5-2. The Rebels did take the lead early in the game then pulled ahead again after the Rampage tied things up. However, the end of the first half proved costly for the Rebels as they gave up 4 goals in the last 7 minutes. The second half was a stalemate with no goals scored for either side. Cody had both goals for the Rebels and Kevin, Chris and Steve added the helpers.

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Rebels Lose to Entourage

The Rebels lost a hard fought game to the Entourage by a score of 7-5. The game was tied 3 all after the first half and was deadlocked at 5 a piece up until the last 5 minutes of the game when the Entourage scored twice within a minute and 15 seconds to take the win. Kevin ended the night with a goal and 3 assists for 4 points and Kyle and Steve tallied 3 points each. Dean scored again to bring his goal streak to 4 games and Nestor got his first point of the season by getting the helper on Dustin. R.'s goal.

Rebels Streak Continues

The first 4 games of the season the Rebels were winless yet in the last 4 game the Rebels are undefeated. The Rebels continued their streak with a 5-3 win over the G.D. Bulldogs. Kyle and Kevin tallied a goal and an two assists each while Dean, Scott and Steve rounded out the scoring. The Rebels are still holding on to 7th place in the division and are only 2 points out of 6th. Also worth mentioning are the are the amount of records held by the Rebels in the division: Largest winning margin in a game (9), most goals for in a game (10) and most points in a game (6, by Kevin). It's a lot more refreshing to see the Rebels holding these types of records rather than ones like most penalties in a game and most penalized team.

Revenge of the Rebels

After losing their first three games of the season versus Team Chaos, the Specialists and Boomsticks, the Rebels have made a full turn and gone undefeated against those same teams with the schedule rolling over and mirroring the first half of the season. In their latest rematch the Rebels defeated the Boomsticks by a score of 6-4. Kevin posted a hat trick while Kyle added 3 points himself. Dean tallied 2 assists and his 2nd empty net goal in as many games. Darren played a solid game defensively adding two assists from the point. Dustin R. filled in for Nestor in net and played a strong game. His glove was one fire after the hole in it, which allowed the first goal against him, was patched up. The win now moves the Rebels into 7th place as they claw their way out of the basement and head for the top.

Rebels Undefeated in Last Two

The Rebels marked the halfway point of the season with a 4-2 victory over the Specialists. Dustin Pursky netted two goals including the game winner and Kyle tallied 3 assists. Dean put the game away in the dying minutes after a great single effort shoveling the ball into the Specialists' empty net. The win now ties the Rebels for 7th spot in the division.

Wednesday, June 03, 2009

Rebels Tie Chaos

After losing their first match against Team Chaos the Rebels looked to return the favour but had to settle for a 3-3 tie. Kyle tallied 2 goals and an assist for a 3 point night and Kevin ended with 2 points. Surprisingly, the Rebels seem to have their tempers under control now as they only took 4 minutes in penalties while Team Chaos had a steady stream to the box ending with 16 minutes worth of infractions.

Thursday, May 28, 2009

Rebels Lose to Mooseknuckles

The Rebels lost to the number 1 seeded Mooseknuckles by a score of 7-2. Nestor played a solid game but was unable to keep the Knuckles at bay due to the unending barrage of shots he faced. Kevin and Dustin R. scored the 2 goals for the Rebels and Devin added an assist on each goal for a 2 point night.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Rebels Get "Edged" Out

The Rebels lost to the Edge 4-1. It was a fairly close game with both teams tied at zero after the first half. The Edge then tallied 2 goals in ten minutes to take the lead but the Rebels were able to close the gap when Kevin scored off a rebound from the point shot by Dustin R. The Rebels tried hard to tie things up but the Edge took over in the last 2 minutes netting 2 more to take the win.

Thursday, May 21, 2009

Rebels Extinguish Spitfires

The Rebels received a long overdue win to bring them out of the Div. 8 basement with a 10-1 blowout versus the Edmonton Spitfires. Kevin notched a hat trick and 3 assists for a 6 point night while Cody, Dustin R. and Kyle tallied 3 points each. Darren, Ryan and Paul also came away with multiple assists giving them 2 points each. Chris notched his first goal in over a season and Devin rounded out the scoring for the Rebels. The Rebels scored almost as many goals in this one game than they have in the last 7 games they have played. With their strong defense and superb goaltending the Rebels showed that that once their offense starts clicking they can be a very competitive team and this game was proof of that. The win also vaulted the Rebels from 11th spot in the Division to 8th and just 2 points out of 7th.

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Rebels Come Up Short Against Rascalz

The Rebels were up 2-0 for the first 16 minutes of the first half but squandered the lead resulting in a 7-4 loss to the Raggamuffin Rascalz. The Rebels weren't able to shut down the only truly good player the Rascalz had who was involved in all but 2 of their goals. Kyle netted 2 goals and Dean added two assists for the Rebels.

Monday, May 04, 2009

Rebels Lose To Rampage

The Rebels lost to the Rampage 5-1 in a fairly one sided affair. The Rebels only managed a handful of shots against the Rampage netminder while Nestor faced shot after shot. He made a ton of great saves but could only stop so many from the barrage sent his way. Devin was able to get the lone goal off a point shot that handcuffed the goalie. It was once again another penalty filled night with with the Rebels sitting in the box for a total of 22 minutes. This now places the Rebels at the top of their division for most penalty minutes and 5th out of the 154 teams in the entire league.

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

Rebels Finally Get a Win

The Rebels got their first win of the season with a 2-1 decision over the Entourage. The Entourage got the lead early in the first half and the Rebels weren't able to answer back until the dying minutes of the game. The Rebels went on a 4 minute powerplay with just under 5 minutes to go and got numerous chances during that time. Kevin was finally able to knock the ball in during a scramble in front of the net to tie the two teams up. Then, on the last rush of the game, Dustin was able to get a pass off to Kevin who snapped a screened shot past the Entourage netminder with just 3.2 seconds remaining to give the Rebels the win. The main reason for the win however was the due to the play of our goaltender. Nestor made highlight reel save after highlight reel save to keep the Rebels in the game.

Sunday, April 26, 2009

Rebels Play Second Overtime in Three Games

The Rebels played their second overtime in the last three games, this time with a better result. The Rebels took the lead early versus the G.D. Bulldogs ending the first half up 3-1 on goals by Kyle, Kevin and Ryan. The Bulldogs battled back though with 2 unanswered goals to tie things up and send the game to overtime. Nothing was settled in the extra frame so the Rebels earned their first point of the season with the tie. The Rebels played more like a team during this match. Kyle lead the team in a meeting and outlined some simple plays that were executed, for the most part, for the entire game. These plays will have to be adhered to for the rest of the season in order to get out of the Div. 8b basement and rise to the top.

Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Rebels Lose Third Straight Game

The Rebels cam up short once again losing to the Boomsticks by a score of 5-2. The Rebels downfall once again was not playing as a team, not executing simple plays to create offense and allowing too many scoring chances in the defensive zone. A team meeting before next game will address these issues which hopefully will result in the Rebels getting back into their winning form.

Rebels Lose In Overtime

The Rebels lost their second straight game after falling to the Specialist in overtime. Down 3-0 at the half way mark of the first, the Rebels finally got on the board with Kevin getting his first of the season. Kevin then added his second on a great individual effort to bring the Rebels to within 1. Steve scored early in the second to tie things up and it stayed deadlocked sending the game into overtime. With just 4 seconds left in the game the Specialists were able to score on a 3 on 2 to steal the point from the Rebels. The Rebels did have penalty trouble again this game with 24 minutes worth of infractions called. This will need to brought under control ASAP if the Rebels expect to keep their team unity in tact.

Rebels Come Up Short in Summer Opener

The Rebels came up short in the first game of their summer season losing to Team Chaos 4-1. Twenty minutes worth of penalties and 3 power play goals by Chaos led to the Rebels’ downfall. One positive though was Dustin R. scoring with just under 3 minutes remaining in the game to break the shut out. The Rebels will need to adjust to the “summer reffing” and stay out of the penalty box in order to ensure a successful season.

Summer Season Begins

The Summer Season started up before the Winter Playoffs started. Due to this I held off on blogging about the summer until the winter wrapped up.
The 3rd annual Skills Competition took place at the Rebels practice on March 30th which saw Kevin retain his title as the fastest runner. He then made it a clean sweep by taking the king of the shootout as well.

Rebels Winter Season Comes to an End

Write up by Cody:

With their playoff hopes on the line, the Rebels came out with a "must win" attitude, however, the effort and connections just didn't click. Mike POWEERRR! returned to the line up after a lengthy time away and came up with 2 goals in the attempt to keep us in the race, along with a goal from Kyle late in the 2nd half just weren't enough to keep the Woodpeckers from hacking us to pieces in the 6-3 loss. With much frustration throughout the entire bench, the Rebels end their most successful Winter season one series away from their 2nd Championship attempt.

Rebels down 1-0 in series opener.

Write up by Cody:

In the series opener against the WoodPeckers, the Rebels came out on a week rest, and some dull legs, and effort and lost 4-3. The WoodPeckers simply outran and out played the Rebels a majority of the game. However, Kevin opened the scoring early in the first half, and notched a Hat Trick, 2 of those goals in the last minute of the game. With the Rebels going into game 2 down 1 game, they face the pressures of being eliminated.

Rebels Sweep Series

Write up by Cody:

In the return of Kyle to the line up, showed how crucial he affects the team when he notched a 3 goal performance, as well as Kevin's memorable 3 on 5 shorthanded goal in the dying minutes of the game. But the real story was the Rebels goaltending, after acquiring Martin Brodeur, he's been keeping the Rebels on top throughout each game, OH WAIT! that was Nestor! Playing absolutely phenomenal and outstanding. After being up 4 - 0 at the halfway mark, the Thunder did anything they could do to stay in the race, but with some amazing goaltending, defence and penalty killing, the Rebels beat down the Thunder 5-4 to move on to the next round.

Rebels Take First Game of Playoffs

The Rebels opened the 3 game series versus the Thunder with a 3-1 win. Paul opened the scoring early sneeking one by the Thunder netminder to give the Rebels the lead. The Thunder answered back near the half way mark of the first the to tie things up. Just under 5 minutes later Cody scored his first ever playoff goal as a Rebel to regain the lead for his team. Dean then added a goal for his second point of the night to seal the deal for the Rebels. The Thunder did make every effort to come back though firing shot after shot from the point but Nestor once again came up big to ensure the win.

Rebels Post Miracle Comeback, Again.

The Rebels came back from a 4-0 deficit versus the Entourage to win 5-4 in yet another comeback. The Entourage seemed to be getting all the bounces in the first half which resulted in them being up 4-0 going into the intermission. The Rebels didn't get discouraged though and even implemented their superstition of switching out the ball. It seemed to work because on the very next shift Scott was able to bang home a rebound of a shot from Steve from the top of the face off circle. Then on the following shift Ryan netted his first of the season to put the Rebels back in the running. Nine minutes later Matt tipped in a shot from the slot to bring the team to within one. The Rebels brought out everything they had to try and get the goal to even things up but it looked like it might have been stifled when Steve got a 4 minute slashing penalty with just a little over two minutes left in the game. The Entourage couldn't capitalize though and with 1:15 remaining in the game Dustin got a pass off to Scott who wristed it into the back of the net. The win places the Rebels 3rd overall in the division to end the regular season. This is the highet the Rebels have ever placed, not just in the winter league, but the summer as well! The Rebels now have an extended break as the have the by through the fist round of the playoff and will wait to play the winner between the Thunder and the Beerhunters.

Rebels Win Streak Ends And The Hands of Colossus

The Rebels, missing their top 3 point-getters for this game, had their winning streak end at 3 games after being upset 5-2 by Colossus. The Rebels did the best they could, hanging on to come out of the first half only down 2-1 with a goal from Dustin. Early in the second Scott tipped in a point shot from Steve on the powerplay to tie things up. But then Colossus took over, the Rebels started playing out of position, and 3 more goals went up on the board for the opposing team to hand the Rebels the loss. The Rebels are just barely holding on to 4th place in the tier so this last game will be crucial to ensure they don't fall any lower and lose having the by through the 1st round of the playoffs.

Rebels Drown Beerhunters in Miracle Comeback

Write up by Cody:

Compare this Rebels game to the Miracle on Manchester game between the Oilers and Kings back in 1982. The Beerhunters came up strong against short benched Rebels team along with Ryan playing as back-up goalie for his first time since Nov. 18, 2008 having yet won a game. The Rebels were down 5-0 16:38 into the 1st half, after a few softies were let in by ryan, and the lack of chemistry and posistioning throughout the line-up. Steve then opened the scoring for the rebels late in the first half with an unassisted slap shot. Bringing some momentum to the 2nd half the Rebels came out hard, playing their positions well and preventing the Beerhunters from getting many shots on net. With 2 goals from Kevin, a goal each from Paul and Barry, and the game winner from Dean knotched the Rebels towards the win. Another reason for the comeback would be the Beerhunters suffering a frustrating 64 PIM in the second half, while all 17 PIM of the Rebels 2nd half were served by Cody. The Rebels are now locked up in 3rd spot still 4 pts out of 1st place.

Rebels Scratch the Rash in OT

Write up by Cody:

The Rebels got a clutch win in overtime in a 6-5 win over the Rash. Dean opened the scoring midway through the first half and the Rebels were up 3-1 at the end of the first half. The Rash still fought back with their short bench to manage a back and forth second half leading into another game with extra time. With a powerplay late in OT for the Rebels, Dustin wound up from the red line to sink the winner past the Rash goaltender. Dustin with his most spectular game of the season, notched 2 goals and 1 assist including the overtime winner, while Nestor again made 30 saves to keep us in the game. With a all around team effort 10 different Rebels walked out with points in the game. The Rebels locked up 4th spot for themselves, and remain just 3 points from 1st place.

Rebels Win in Midnight Shooutout

Write up by Cody:

After leaving the arena after 12:30 in the morning, the Rebels came out with a 4-3 shootout win over the Thunder. The thunder came out hard in the first half having only 2 spares and keeping the Rebels scoreless through 25:00 min. Throughout the second half, the Thunder lost their thunder and gave up 3 goals, but bounced back with 2 goals of their own to tie it back up. Kevin came up with another multi-point night scoring a goal and an assist, although the story would have to be the goaltending. Nestor once again came up big, especially in the shootout allowing zero out of 6 shots. Scott came up big after 6 other Rebels shot, scoring the lone shootout goal for the big win. The win puts the team at a 4-way tie for 4th place in the division, and only 3 points from the top spot.

Rebels Lose Second Game In a Row

For the first time this season the Rebels were handed back to back losses after the Wood Peckers won by a score of 8-2. The Rebels have had more goals scored on them in the past two games (15) than they're previous six added together (12). The consensus with the Rebels is that they feel they're now "out of their league" after being moved up two divisions but the fact remains that the new division is still mostly made up of the top teams from the old division, most of which the Rebels disposed of quite easily. As the end of the regular season approaches the Rebels need to return to their winning ways in order to gain confidence going into the play-offs.

Rebels Gunned Down by Mafia Again

Write up by Cody:

Going into the game with a 6 game winning streak, the Rebels couldn't surpass the Mafia again after a 7-4 beating. All full line up and some hard work along with some frustration by some of us, was just not enough. The Mafia out played us in many ways, sneaking past 7 goals behind the below 2 GAA goalie Nestor. Steve and Kevin topped the night with a goal and assist each, and Matt got his first goal of the winter season. Let's not get our heads down and go into next game and start our streak all over again!

Rebels Grip Past Vice in Shootout 3-2

Write up by Cody:

Going into the game in a fresh new tier 7 the Rebels looked to continue their winning ways. Facing the Karachi Vice getting many chances and opportunities early and throughout the game the Rebels and Nestor get their 6th straight win. Nestor playing yet another phenomenal performance stopped 37 shots, and Kevin having a GREAT game came out with a goal early in the first half and then the shootout winning goal, after returning from leaving the game midway through the second half due to injury. After some questionable reffing, another hard fought game well earned for the Rebels was won, keep up the good work and communication guys.
Kevin also wanted to dedicate his OT shootout goal to Dean's new son (and future Rebel) Reece, who was born the day of the game.

Phantoms Haunted By Rebels

Write up by Cody:

Rebels fight past the Phantoms 6-1 to take the spot in the division in a 4-way tie for first place.
The Rebels had almost all their players out tonight with 3 forward lines, and 7 defensemen. During the first half while the Phantoms had their legs going, the Rebels were kept from the score board until late in the period when Kevin opened the scoring. Going into the second half, everything seemed to open up for the Rebels. Cody scored his first goal in a few games just 57 seconds into the second half, as well as another super highlight goal midway through the second half and the game winning goal. Kyle came out with 2 goals, 2 assists along with a great performance with his entire line. Nestor played another extremely well game with getting his shutout taken away with 13 minutes left in the game. With almost 20 players out, the Rebels showed that even with an overload of players we can all communicate as a team and move forward in the standings. Lets keep up the great work and communication and let the wins keep on flowing!
